I’m The Spa Spy, an experienced esthetician of more than a decade and a spa owner. I visit tons of day spas, skin care clinics, massage places, and waxing salons to see what is being offered out there. I’m based in Los Angeles but visit businesses all over and will post about them too. If you ever visit a skin care clinic, day spa, or waxing salon, trust me when I say what you don’t know CAN hurt you. Hygiene is a major issue at many places, and I know this because I know what to look for and I’ve seen things that are alarming and downright disgusting. Any business offering spa services should be sanitizing and disinfecting, and any place that does hair removal by waxing needs to be very zealous about client care and hygiene.

One main offender is double-dipping wax sticks into the wax pot. Most places I’ve visited double-dip which is unsanitary and just plain gross. You should always check this by looking at the wax pots in your treatment room. If you see sticks sitting on the edge of the pot, or worse yet you see a stick IN the wax pot, run the other direction. My staff and I always use a fresh stick whenever dipping into the wax, which is the only way to guarantee hygiene and sanitation. Wax doesn’t get to a boiling temperature so even though it is hot, bacteria can live in the wax pot if a stick gets reused.
